Lychnis
coronaria
Truly an 'heirloom' if one follows these things- I was first fascinated in child-hood at my grandmother's cottage in southern Michigan, where this plant has surely been growing and self seeding since the late 1800's. Amazing foliage - like grey or silver felt, forming basal rosettes of lance shaped leaves up to 7 inches long. In early summer sends up large, loosely branched sprays of single magenta flowers in long succession, 'alba' with white. Unfortunately short-lived, must be divided regularly or rely on self seeding, alba will not self-seed true in presence of magenta.
Size: 32 inches high, 18 inches wide
Flowering Time: early to mid-summer
Zones: 4 - 8
Sun/Shade: full sun to part shade
Price: $5.00, pot size 3"
